In 1993 Georg Riedel invited a distinguished panel of Californian Zinfandel producers to join him for a series of workshops and tastings. He believed that the quality and diversity of this uniquely American grape variety warranted a glass that would fully highlight the subtlety and complexity of the wines that are made from it. And he saw the creation of a Zinfandel glass as a collaborative effort between winemaker and glass maker.

The panel came to the conclusion that an already existing Riedel shape (for Chianti Classico) seemed to show off Zinfandel’s qualities to the best advantage. This slender glass accentuates the variety’s rich berry and spice bouquet. It also tempers the heat of the alcohol, gently interweaving acidity, tannins and fruit to create a perfect balance of all varietal elements.
