Chile had no indigenous vines. Classic vinifera grape varieties were brought to Chile from Bordeaux during the mid-1800's, just before the outbreaks of phylloxera and powdery mildew in Europe.

This is significant in that Chile holds a treasure trove of European vine cuttings and their descendents that pre-date the viticultural scourges which plagued the industry in the late 19th century. Additionally, due to natural geographic isolation and conscientious quarantine measures, Chile has largely maintained the health of its vine stocks.

In fact, neither phylloxera nor powdery mildew is present in Chile today. Most vines are grown on their own roots, and because of the dry climate and absence of oidium, less spray materials are needed during the growing season than in many other grape-growing regions.
