Pinot Noir is one of the world's oldest vines, and is a classic red variety of the
Burgundy region of France. It's one of the few grapes that is almost always made into a
pure varietal wine. This may explain why Pinot Noir is often called the "Queen of Red
Wines". Pinot Noir grows successfully in the cooler climates of Oregon (Williamette
Valley) and California (Napa, Sonoma, Central Coast, Monterey, Santa Barbara). Pinot Noir
clusters are small with numerous thinskinned grapes. Its delicate nature makes Pinot
Noir a difficult grape to grow. Pinot Noir is
characterized by floral (violets) aromas and spicy, berry and ripe fruit (plums or cherry)
flavors. While at times this wine can be full-bodied, similar to a Cabernet Sauvignon, it
usually has a lighter, more delicate flavor with less tannin than most other red wines. |
