Our Winery:
McWilliams Wines, one of Australias most highly respected family-owned wine
companies, has been at the forefront of Australian winemaking since 1877. McWilliams
Hanwood Estate wines, noted for their complexity and fresh fruit flavours, have been
crafted from premium fruit sourced from renowned wine regions in South Eastern Australia.
The Land:
The Riverina region has outstanding terroir, with nearby streams bringing a natural water
source and fertile soil. Just north of Australias Southern seaboard, Coonawarra is
famed for its clay-based terra rossa soil and cool climate patterns. The Hunter
Valleys warm climate and heavy volcanic loam soil contribute an excellent balance to
the wine.

Harvest Report:
The 2001 vintage was generally very good in the regions from which this wine was sourced.
The vintage was characterised by warm and dry weather, which resulted in fully ripened
fruit. Relatively low yields allowed for highly concentrated, full-flavoured grapes.
Winemakers Notes:
All the grapes were picked during the cool of the night, de-stemmed, lightly crushed and
transferred to a combination of rotary and headed-down fermentation tanks to
extract maximum colour and flavour. A portion of the wine was barrel fermented in new
American oak puncheons, before the entire wine was matured in a combination of one, two
and three-year-old oak for nine months. |
